Curriculum - Design & Technology

Intent

The Design Technology curriculum at the Village Federation aims to develop the children’s skills and knowledge in textiles, structures, mechanisms, electrical systems, cooking and nutrition through real life problems and challenges which make real links across various areas of the curriculum.

The long term planning cycle for design technology has been designed to ensure coverage of the key areas each year. Additionally, opportunities have been designed to link with other areas of the curriculum, particular areas of interest, opportunities to work with local specialists etc.  Planning helps children to develop a clear sequence of knowledge and skills which build up as they move through the school.

There are three core activities (designing, making and evaluating) children engage with in design and technology which are combined in sequence to create a D&T project. Focus is also placed on the development of technical knowledge as pupils move through the school. Specific provision will also be timetabled for the cooking and nutrition aspects of the curriculum in addition to work relating to healthy eating and lifestyle which is covered in science.
